5 research-based design principles for porting iOS apps to Android

by @dmitryn

1. UX differences between Android and iOS are only noticed by expert Android users.

2. When in doubt, Android users reach for the hard buttons.

3. iOS UX elements whose function is clear can be successfully used by Android users.

4. iOS UX elements that are redundant with Android hard buttons should not be used.

5. iOS UX elements whose purpose is unclear without iOS familiarity should be replaced by Android conventions.

The Sensors Are Coming! - NYTimes.com

Other sensors built into your next-generation phone could include heart monitors to keep tabs on your health. There will also be sensors that can detect perspiration and could be used to monitor your excitement level and even mood. Additionally, phones will include more microphones, and temperature and humidity sensors to better determine their location and surroundings.

This sensor-filled world will also affect video games. Sensors that can detect mood and excitement will usher in an era of video games that will factor in emotion during gameplay

(via Apple approves JavaScript iOS games that don’t use a browser)

“They don’t use PhoneGap or Titanium. They don’t even use a UIWebView. Instead, they bypass the iPhone’s browser altogether and use Apple’s JavaScript interpreter (JavaScriptCore) directly. All graphics are rendered with OpenGL instead of in a browser window and all sound and music is played back with OpenAL,” Szablewski says.

Poistr

Users can create various objects within the layers coupled with a way to set the range of each action (the active range in meters your objects can be triggered). The intuitive interface for developing layers makes it easy to add videos, images and audio by simply giving Poistr the URL to the media file. Additionally, details about the location such as the telephone number, SMS, website URL and email address can be added.

Another cool feature of Poistr allows users to easily import multiple POIs or locations via KMZ files and GeoRSS (Coordinates from Google Maps). Alternatively as we’d mentioned, the address can be manually input as well.
